Where a Global Movement Began

Since 1988, Movement.org has been a catalyst for united prayer and Gospel impact in Metro New York. Those roots have since grown into a global movement reaching more than 300 cities across five continents.

Demographics

New York City is home to nearly 8.6 million people, making it the largest city in the United States and one of the world’s most important urban centers.

More than one-third of New York City residents are foreign-born, and nearly half speak a language other than English at home, reflecting a city shaped by people and cultures from around the world.

One in four New Yorkers — nearly 2.2 million people, including about 450,000 children — lives in poverty, highlighting significant economic challenges alongside the city’s wealth and opportunity.

New York City is a global center of influence in finance, media, arts, culture and commerce, giving the city an outsized influence on ideas and culture around the world.

Since 1988

Tuesday afternoon prayer gatherings on Zoom connect local pastors and ministry leaders. The Pastors Prayer Summit, held each January, has convened 6,000 pastors and leaders over the last 36 years.

Movement Day

Movement Day NYC is hosted annually each October. Founded in 2010, this catalytic event brings together church, parachurch and marketplace leaders to work collaboratively to address the city’s greatest needs. Since the launch of Movement Day in New York, 60,000 leaders from 900 cities have participated in Movement Day gatherings globally.

Emerging Leaders Cohort

The ALI Emerging Leaders Cohort is a five-month leadership development program for Christian leaders ages 21–35 in the New York City Metro area. Through mentorship, hands-on learning and a collaborative group project, participants develop as leaders, strengthen their character and build relationships that last well beyond the program.

Movement Day NYC: Collaboration to Impact the Next Generation

October 29, 2025 by Brian Steck

“Dwelling with the Next Generation” was the focus of the 16th Annual Movement Day NYC on October 17 at Bethel Gospel Assembly in Harlem.

Hosted by Movement.org, the event united 320 attendees composed of church, parachurch, and marketplace leaders and featured the release of the Movement.org 2025 Generations Survey report.

Earlier this year, Movement.org commissioned a youth survey in Metro New York City. The data was compiled and analyzed by Dr. Tony Carnes (A Journey Through NYC Religions Data Center), and Arik Nabie, assistant pastor of First Assembly in Queens, NY.

In the first session of Movement Day NYC, panels and keynote speakers gave insight on how to better understand and reach the next generation. In session two, attendees applied those insights during interactive table discussions that encouraged collaboration.

Movement Day speakers included Mac Pier, founder of Movement.org; Fernando Cabrera, a former NYC Councilman and pastor of New Life Outreach International in the Bronx; and Dan Buttafuoco, founder of Historical Bible Society and founder and senior partner at Buttafuoco and Associates.  Panel discussions featured Kirk Foote of Young Life NYC and his team, and Pastor Gabrielle Beam and a team of young leaders from Bridgeport (CT) Movement Day.

Dr. Mac Pier opened Movement Day with an exhortation entitled, “A Global Spiritual Awakening Among Youth,” citing encouraging reports from Asia, the United Kingdom, and campuses in the United States.

Fernando Cabrera’s message, “Dwelling with Next Gen: The Tide Is Turning,” emphasized that this is a pivotal and hopeful moment. He framed it as a season of divine opportunity, urging attendees to recognize God’s invitation to partner with Him through spirit-led systems and strategies that connect this generation and the church.

Dan Buttafuoco stressed the importance of apologetics, especially among teens and young adults. He cited research that indicated how over 70 percent of students who enter college as Christians leave with little to no faith. At Movement Day, Dan Buttafuoco released his latest book, Unapologetic: Clear Answers to Tough Bible Questions.

The All People Free Documentary was featured at Movement Day NYC, offering attendees a powerful look into the harsh realities of modern-day slavery in the brick kilns of North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Later that evening, the full version of the documentary premiered at Cityline Church in Jersey City, NJ.

With an emphasis on impacting the next generation, Movement Day NYC gave a platform to 12 local youth ministries, enabling strategic networking opportunities for church, ministry, and marketplace leaders.

As a result of Movement Day, Pastor Fernando Cabrera is now collaborating with Cru to plant a campus expression at Lehman College. Several churches are seeking to connect with Inspire Sports Camp to send urban young people to camp. These are only a few examples of how the event strengthened the Gospel ecosystem of New York City.

“Hundreds of connections were made, and possibilities were created to collaborate on a much larger scale,” said Mac Pier. “Movements are about speed and scale.”

Movement.org Releases Survey on Youth Faith Trends

October 29, 2025 by Brian Steck

One of the highlights of Movement Day NYC—held on October 17 at Bethel Gospel Assembly in Harlem—was the release of the Movement.org 2025 Generations Survey report.

Earlier this year, Movement.org commissioned a youth survey among churches and ministries in Metro New York City. The data was analyzed and compiled by Dr. Tony Carnes (A Journey Through NYC Religions Data Center), and Arik Nabie, assistant pastor of First Assembly in Queens, NY.

Each of the 320 attendees at Movement Day NYC received a copy of the report. Four key insights centered on prayer habits, Bible reading, trust in leadership, and teaching relevance in the Church:

  • Prayer Habits: Adults remain deeply anchored in prayer, while Gen Z’s consistency is notably lower. Although most respondents affirmed prayer as important, frequency and depth declined with youth. Ministries should reignite prayer culture among youth through structured rhythms, peer-led prayer times, and digital devotionals that meet them where they are.
  • Bible Reading: Bible engagement shows a similar generational divide. Many teens confessed irregular reading habits, with daily readers being a minority compared to adults over 30. This suggests a need for creative approaches to Scripture engagement such as Bible journaling, app-based reading plans, and collaborative study groups that connect Scripture to real-life issues.
  • Trust in Leadership: A pronounced trust gap exists between generations. Teens and young adults often perceive pastors as distant or institutional, rating their trust levels around 6–7 out of 10. To close this gap, churches should elevate authenticity, mentorship, and visibility of younger leaders, fostering trust through relationship rather than authority.
  • Teaching Relevance: Youth rated the relevance of church teaching to their lives around 7.5/10. This signals the need for more contextual, life-connected teaching that addresses modern challenges like anxiety, social identity, justice, and purpose. The Gospel message remains the same—but its delivery must meet the next generation’s context.

“The survey results reveal both opportunity and urgency: The Church must reclaim its formative voice by engaging Gen Z authentically, creatively, and compassionately. If we fail to disciple them with intentionality, we risk raising a generation that believes in God but no longer finds the Church essential,” said Rev. Arik Nabie.

“The findings of this survey are not simply statistics—they are a prophetic call to action. The next generation is listening; the question is whether the Church will speak in ways they hear.”

Movement Day Bridgeport Unites City Leaders for Transformational Change

July 9, 2025 by Brian Steck

“A Moment in Time.”

That was the theme for the inaugural Movement Day Bridgeport on June 14, 2025, at Cathedral of Faith Church where leaders from every sector—government, faith-based nonprofits, clergy, and young adults—united around a shared vision for the city’s future.

This “moment in time” in Bridgeport, Connecticut was not missed, according to Rev. Gabrielle Beam, the director of Movement Day Bridgeport (MDB) and pastor of The Rivers Anglican Church.

“God is pouring out His Spirit on Bridgeport to unify the church in a deeper way so that we can get more work done and He can be glorified in the city. It’s undeniable,” she said.

Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim challenged the church community not only to pray for the city but to dream big and act boldly in pursuit of lasting change.

“What is your dream for this city?” he asked.

MDB highlighted four core pillars: marketplace and workforce development, emerging leadership, education reform, and gospel proclamation. These themes were not only discussed but activated, as faith-based organizations like Elevate, Rise to Read, Faith Acts, and Raising Highly Capable Kids united in their mission to address Bridgeport’s education crisis from preschool to high school.

Another highlight of MDB was the passion of Next Gen leaders who were willing to “take on the weight of the problems of affordable housing, homelessness, and education of the next generation,” Pastor Gabrielle said.

MDB also sparked groundbreaking partnerships. For the first time, Catholic leaders joined what had largely been a Protestant-led initiative. Likewise, the historically siloed Black, White, and Hispanic clergy associations were visibly unified. Leaders stood on stage and called for forgiveness, healing, and shared purpose. The symbolic act of reconciliation culminated in spontaneous embraces among pastors and congregants—an emotional display of what it means to be the Church in one heart and one voice.

Connecticut State Senator Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox and Representative Christopher Rosario lent political weight to the day’s themes, with a focus on paid apprenticeships, workforce development, and legislative solutions.

Panel discussion at Movement Day Bridgeport

Overall, MDB was marked by a spirit of unity, collaboration, transformation and purpose.

Post-event feedback was extremely positive. One pastor sent a text to the organizers of MDB, quoting Psalm 27:13, “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”

“We must continue the course of unity through the Spirit,” he wrote. “For 30 years, I had hoped to see the body of Christ come together as one in our region.”

In the last decade, a group of 30 to 40 Bridgeport pastors have worked toward transformation in their city through various initiatives and outreaches. MDB not only solidified that foundation but also cast a renewed vision for an even greater impact.

“We are now seeing the beginning of a harvest and a much deeper work,” Pastor Gabrielle said.

THE FIRST MOVEMENT DAY was hosted in New York City in 2010 through the partnership of Dr. Mac Pier and Movement.org and Dr. Tim Keller and Redeemer City to City. Leaders from the church, non-profit, and marketplace communities gathered to celebrate what had been accomplished, examine areas that still needed work, and find tangible ways to collaborate for continued flourishing. In the last 15 years, Movement Day expressions have been hosted in 900 cities across the globe. Find out more at movementorg.kinsta.cloud/.

Accelerating A Global Gospel Movement at the 1,000 Cities Summit

June 17, 2025 by Brian Steck

Unite. Equip. Transform. Multiply.

That was the theme when MOVEMENT.ORG hosted its 1,000 Cities Summit at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC, on May 16-17, 2025.

The annual Summit gathers leaders from the marketplace, the church, and parachurch arenas to collaborate around MOVEMENT.ORG’s vision to accelerate the gospel in 1,000 global cities. These urban centers have urgent social and spiritual needs—and Gospel movements are the key to lasting, transformational change.

Currently, MOVEMENT.ORG is impacting leaders in 300 cities on five continents.

MOVEMENT.ORG is UNITING the church to pray. It is EQUIPPING local leaders who know their cities best – enabling them to launch gospel movements that are TRANSFORMING communities through collaborative action. These same leaders are MULTIPLYING this vision across hundreds of cities globally.

At the 1,000 Cities Summit, Mac Pier, founder of MOVEMENT.ORG, recalled how that formula helped the Evangelical Church grow by 750% in New York City from 1989 to 2019. Since the inaugural Movement Day in New York in 2010, the Scholars Program and Movement Day events have been multiplied in hundreds of cities in the United States and globally.

“We have seen this tremendous growth in Manhattan and now see it happening around the world,” he said. “We are hopeful that, by the end of 2027, we will be active in 300 additional cities, bringing the total to 600. We are on a trajectory to fulfill our 1,000 Cities Vision by the year 2033.”

The Summit featured keynote messages from Steve Green, president of Hobby Lobby and Board Chair of the Museum of the Bible; Dr. Terry Smith, senior pastor of The Life Church, West Orange, New Jersey; and Dr. John Jenkins, senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Glenarden, Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Another highlight of the Summit was reports from MOVEMENT.ORG’s regional leaders in Africa, South Asia, Brazil, and the Middle East, and an update on new regions in Central Asia, the Balkans, and Southeast Asia.

“We believe that we can multiply this vision in 1,000 cities over the next several years,” Mac Pier said. “This is not an arbitrary number. There are 4,000 cities around the world that have a population of more than 100,000. God cares for every person in every city.”

“I believe that if we have collective agreement and commitment to the future together, we can see God do some things that we believe will be world historic.”

TOGETHER WE CAN TRANSFORM CITIES: With your partnership, MOVEMENT.ORG is equipping leaders, uniting churches, and sparking Gospel Movements across the globe. Click here to give.
