South Asia

A Movement Gaining Momentum Across South Asia

Since the launch of the Scholars Program in 2020, South Asia — led by significant growth in India — has become one of Movement.org’s fastest-growing regions. Christian leaders are being equipped to build stronger networks, address the needs of rapidly growing cities and expand Gospel movements throughout the region.

Demographics

South Asia is home to more than one billion Hindus. Christians in India face intense persecution, discrimination and violence, particularly those who convert from Hinduism.

More than 770 million people in South Asia live in urban areas, including more than 520 million in India alone, making the region’s rapidly growing cities increasingly important centers of population and influence.

More than 359 million people in Central and Southern Asia live in slums or informal settlements, often without adequate housing, sanitation and other basic services.

Youth unemployment (ages 15-24) in South Asia is about 15%, leaving millions of young people struggling to find work as they enter adulthood.

Highlights of Movement.org’s work in the Region.

Resilient Faith

In Imphal, Manipur, 400 churches were burned to the ground. Yet, our community of Movement Day Scholars has birthed 15 house churches in the past few years.

Good News in Siliguri

Siliguri is a rapidly growing city and major regional crossroads, where population growth and migration are creating new social and economic challenges. In that city, Movement.org Scholars put their training into action by launching a Gospel Truck Evangelism effort that reached 30,000 people with the Gospel.

Job Creation

In Chennai, one Movement Day Scholar initiated a network of 400 Christian marketplace leaders, working hand-in-hand with the government to create jobs in a country with 1 million young people entering the work force each month.
