“Seek the peace and prosperity of the city…” – Jeremiah 29:7

As a backbone organization, Movement.org unites churches, parachurch ministries and marketplace leaders to seek God together, build trusted relationships and collaborate for the spiritual and social flourishing of their cities.

This happens through:

Mobilizing and growing a movement of united prayer in cities and regions

Hosting catalytic events for city leaders (Movement Day)

Hosting the First Thursday Global Prayer Call (Zoom)

A LEGACY OF

United Prayer

Mac and Marya Pier arrived in New York City in 1984. Mac was on staff with InterVarsity, where he and his team supervised 15 campus ministries for a decade. At the time, New York City could be described as nearly bankrupt, increasingly violent and, in many communities, severely underchurched. It is estimated that just 9,000 people, out of a population of 1.5 million, attended Bible-believing churches in Manhattan.

Mac, along with colleagues from Cru Inner City, organized the first Concert of Prayer on Feb. 5, 1988, at First Baptist Church of Flushing. This historic gathering of 75 churches inspired the formation of Concerts of Prayer Greater New York, the forerunner to MOVEMENT.ORG, later that year.

Over the next 38 years (1988-2026), more than 2,000 churches and 250,000 people participated in an unprecedented movement of united prayer across New York City.

During that time, we witnessed two remarkable answers to prayer.
The city’s murder rate declined by 70% to 80% from its peak in the early 1990s through 2009. During the same period, evangelicalism in Manhattan grew by more than 300%, aided in part through our partnership with Tim Keller and Redeemer City to City.

The New York City prayer movement also laid the foundation for Movement Day, launched in 2010 to unite Christian leaders around the shared mission of seeking the spiritual and social flourishing of their cities.

What began as a New York gathering has since spread to over 300 cities across five continents, where local leaders have adapted the model to unite churches in prayer, strengthen relationships across denominational lines and collaborate for gospel impact. Today, citywide prayer gatherings and leadership networks inspired by this vision continue to meet regularly around the world.
