A Growing Movement Across Brazil

Home to more than 200 million people and some of the world’s largest cities, Brazil represents an important part of Movement.org’s global work. Across the nation, Christian leaders are building relationships, addressing the challenges facing their cities and working together to see their communities flourish through the Gospel.

Demographics

Brazil is home to more than 212 million people, with nearly 88% of the population living in urban areas.

Brazil has one of the world’s highest levels of income inequality, with the top 1% accounting for about 27% of the nation’s income.

Nearly 1 million Brazilian children and adolescents ages 4–17 are not attending school, including 440,000 teenagers ages 15–17.

About one in five Brazilians lives below the poverty line, highlighting the economic challenges facing millions of people across the country.

Highlights of Movement.org’s work in the Region

In São Paulo

Our Scholars are building 54 affordable homes as an application to their training. More than 5,000 leaders in this great city have been impacted by Movement Day.

In Natal (North Zone of Brazil)

Scholars mobilized 700 volunteers from 80 churches to reach 7,000 people living in poverty. As a result, there were 230 conversions to Christianity.

From 2026 to 2028

We envision training 300 leaders in our Scholars program and engaging 20 cities annually.

City Gospel Movements Impact São Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, and Natal

In August, Mac Pier and Josh Miles of Movement.org joined Movement São Paulo for 10 days of powerful ministry in Brazil. Highlights included a Running for Cities event benefiting World Vision; three forums on the racial-reconciliation book Required with authors Mac Pier and Bishop Claude Alexander; teaching sessions on The Hospitable Leader with Pastor Terry A. Smith; a faith-and-work gathering; two days of Movement Day Scholars training; and the third Movement Day São Paulo.

The schedule also featured a special ministry day in Metro Rio de Janeiro with 100 leaders preparing to launch Movement Day there in 2026. Another milestone was the release of the Portuguese edition of Ian Shelton’s book God Is a City Builder. Across the ten days, the team cast vision to more than 5,000 leaders.

In October, ALEF hosted its 20th Annual Congress in Natal, Brazil for pastors, church leaders and ministers. For the past four years, Movement.org has sent a team to teach for the week. This year, 66 leaders in the Movement Day Scholars Program attended. Movement Day Brazil was featured Saturday morning for more than 300 leaders from 75 cities. Two Movement Day Scholars faculty, Tom White (Frontline Ministries) and Eric Swanson (City Leaders Collective), led sessions.

Movement São Paulo, under the leadership of Rev. Samuel Pereira De Lima, is training leaders across Brazil to cultivate the spiritual and social flourishing of their cities, including a bold effort to evangelize 15,000 households in Felipe Camarão. The Movement Day Scholars Program in Brazil has had 11 graduates who have developed 10-year city transformation plans. The Natal Scholars team is committed to planting 100 new churches, revitalizing 200 others, and reaching 30,000 people for Christ. Together, these efforts reflect a growing movement of collaboration, service, and Gospel impact across Brazil.

How has the Movement Day Scholars Program impacted your city?

The impact of the Movement Day Scholars Program in Brazil is significant. By nurturing a new generation of leaders equipped with holistic theological understanding and cross-cultural competency, this program holds the promise of catalyzing transformation, innovation, and flourishing across Brazilian cities.

With the world’s ninth largest economy, Brazil is a major financial player. However, challenges like poverty, violence, corruption, and social inequality remain. The Brazilian church reflects this dichotomy. There is rapid growth, with evangelicals comprising 30 percent of the population, but the church also faces pressing issues like doctrinal inconsistencies, church divisions, and the inability to enact tangible social change.

The Movement Day Scholars Program is helping meet the need for localized resources, training, and mentorship. In Brazil, the program is a conduit for fostering unity, collaboration, and renewal within the church. As we embark on ambitious endeavors to establish cohorts and launch Movement Day initiatives in Brazil’s 10 most strategic cities, our vision extends beyond mere evangelism to the creation of Gospel ecosystems that nurture spiritual and social abundance.

Samuel Lima is the Movement Day Scholars Program Coordinator for Brazil.
